This weekend sees the fantastic event that can be Glasgow Pride. A time when the LGBT+ comes together to stand for equality and the celebration of diversity not only here within our own community but with solidarity with everyone else who identifies under the LGBT+ banner. While not being able to attend myself this year, it doesn’t mean I won’t be celebrating in my own way.
As such, here are my top 10 songs to get into the Pride spirit (in no particular order).
It’s Raining Men – Geri Halliwell
How can you not have a pride playlist and not have a version of this song included? I have chosen Geri’s version because to me it is the one most likely to get me up and dance, with or without a drink. Also, how can you have a pride playlist and not have a nod to the Spice Girls somewhere in it?
Dancing On My Own – Robyn
I was tempted to put the Callum Scott version in this since he is an LGBT artist, but I need to go with the original on this one. It brings back so many fond memories of dancing away in The Polo Lounge and the many times you fall for the wrong person. Guilty!
Your Disco Needs You – Kylie Minogue
Does this one really need an explanation? It is Kylie, its high 90’s pop realness, and, it is about a disco! If there ever was to become a gay nation on the planet, this should be in serious contention to be the national anthem.
You Think You’re A Man – Full Frontal
Such an iconic song originally from the queer icon that is Divine, however, it was this version that I fell in love with. It came from a show, Queer as Folk, both the U.K. and U.S.A. versions were monumental steps forward in television and prime time LGBT representation.
I Just Wanna F**king Dance – Alison Jiear
I can’t explain why I love this one so much. It is my ultimate f**k it track. Yet have I to find anyone who doesn’t scream in excitement when this comes on in a club. I have no clue how this song came into my life, it just has always been there.
I Wanna Dance With Somebody – Whitney Huston
The other I want to dance song. A fantastic, get everyone on the dancefloor, mood lifting kind of song.
Sissy That Walk -RuPaul
I couldn’t have my own personal pride playlist (try saying that ten times fast) without a nod to RuPaul and Drag Race, especially from the season where most of my favourite queens come from.
Strong Enough – Cher
Cher. There is no way I was leaving her out of my top ten! I know, not one the predictable ones like Believe, but this song came into my life at the right time, and when I need a little boost, I always put it on.
Take Me or Leave Me – Rent
Those that know me, know musicals play a big part in my life. Those that know me really well know that Rent is my all time favourite! Especially Take Me or Leave Me. This, to me, will always be the song for my best friend Alex and myself. He was the one that introduced me to the show, the song and a lot of things actually. He has always been there, been a rock, strength and dragged me, at times kicking and screaming, out of my shell. I’ll never be able to repay him or thank him enough, maybe this goes a little way though.
Let’s Have a Kiki – Scissor Sisters
Simply the gayest, draggiest song I didn’t know I needed into my life until it came along. Also, it has a pretty impressive dance routine. Another thing I can’t pass up is a good dance routine, people will be surprised there is no Steps song on this list! This song also continues my love and obsession with Ana Matronic.
